TRANSITION BRO DDYFI - THE BIG LAUNCH - 18th MARCH 2010

On Thursday the 18th of March, Transition Bro Ddyfi welcomes everyone to its official Launch at Y Plas, Machynlleth, between 5.30 and 10.30pm . There will be locally sourced food available from 5:30 for people coming straight from work and the main event, starting at 6:30pm, will be an evening of celebration - of the Transition Movement as a whole and of the amazing projects and groups here in the Dyfi Valley that are working towards building and maintaining local resilience to the coming energy and climate-related challenges that we will all face.

the big launchThe main event will feature a keynote presentation by Rob Hopkins, a highly entertaining and inspiring speaker, who founded the Transition Movement several years ago at Kinsale in the Irish Republic. Rob has been involved with the Movement pretty much full-time ever since, so if you want to find out about it then he's the man to come and listen to! There will be a bar and a variety of live acts as well as the opportunity to discuss what we're doing.

The Bro Ddyfi Transition Initiative, one of many local Transition Initiatives around the world, first began in 2007 as a way of exploring how we might respond as a community to the twin challenges of forthcoming oil shortages and of the effects of climate change. Transition Initiatives work at a grassroots level towards developing local resilience in the community: in short they focus on three "R's": Recognition - actually understanding the issues we face in the coming years of the 21st Century; Reskilling - regaining the practical life-skills that our grandparents took for granted and Relocalisation - the importance of local economic regeneration, especially with respect to food production.

A complimentary event to follow the 'Big Launch' is taking place at Y Plas on Saturday the 20th of March: the Spring Open Day, starting at 11.00am till late. The day will be in three parts. It starts with a 'Be The Change Symposium', a lively, informative and engaging look at where we are, how we got here and where are we going. This is a real chance as a community to plan for a more sustainable, fairer and fulfilling future. Next, there will be a free showing of the award winning film, 'The Age of Stupid' - a poignant and inspiring wake up call to us all. In the evening there will be a twmpath, with music from local bands. Food and refreshments will be provided and there will be a bar in the evening. There is no charge for either of these events, but donations would be welcome.

The
next Transition Bro Ddyfi meeting will be at 7.30pm, upstairs at the White Lion, Machynlleth, on Wednesday 20th May. Looking to see if there's any feedback from the Groups that formed at the last meeting back in April - to recap:

At this first meeting we talked about gardening and growing food, Community Orchards, the need for a Heart and Soul group to look at the emotional and psychological fallout from sudden changes, such as brought on by climate change, peak oil etc, skillshares, awareness raising etc.

A Community Orchard group was formed to look at available land in the Bro Ddyfi Area to plant fruit and nut trees, possibly with the help of a Glasu grant. The group will have a first meeting very soon to discuss issues further.

A Heart and Soul group was also formed. Tom Brown is taking this forward.

The garden swap initiated by Transition Bro Ddyfi Trawsnewid and CAMAD will be advertised on swapshop to see if more volunteers can be attracted. (Helen has done this, thanks)

Other items that were brought up to be looked into in the future: Allotments, re-skilling, visible manifestation projects, presentation from council to council, gardening, forest gardens, business group setting up, documentary/media, homegroups, outreach work in awareness raising and probably some more things that I didn't quite get.

Come along for a beer and a chat - looking forward to seeing you all!

CAT News: an invite to what looks to be an interesting seminar on June 3rd:

As part of the Zero Carbon Britain research programme, the Centre for Alternative Technology invites you to join us in an open meeting to explore the role of renewable energies in a zero carbon future.

CAT would like to share with you a Zero Carbon Britain scenario which details how we can ‘powerdown’ the energy needed to deliver well being, whilst ‘powering-up’ renewable sources. So rather than residing at the tail end of a peaking, polluting, fossil fuel import pipeline, Britain’s rural and urban communities can head their own indigenous renewable energy supply chain.

Agenda:

• Welcome and introduction to CAT

• Brief history of alternative approaches to energy

• Creating the vision – a 100% renewable energy scenario

• Nation and local scale actions

• Refreshment break

• Making it happen – barriers, drivers and industry perspectives

• Panel discussion

• Optional - tours of CAT energy systems

• Buffet and informal discussion

Please join us

Wednesday 3 June, 2pm – 6pm
Straw Bale Theatre, Centre for Alternative Technology

Followed by a vegetarian buffet and a glass of wine, 6pm – 8pm

This event has been made possible with the support of the Carnegie UK Trust and is free and open to all. Space is limited so booking is essential and must be received by Monday 1 June – thank you.

RSVP

To reserve your place at this event, please contact Deborah Sale, CAT Events Manager. Please kindly indicate if you wish to stay for the buffet in the evening - thank you.

Welsh Transition Groups Training (morning)
and Open Space Day (afternoon)
at the Owain Glyndwr Centre, Machynlleth

1100-1300: Facilitating Groups - A workshop gaining practical skills and techniques for working with groups such as theme groups, initiating groups, project teams etc. This aims to support the growth of the TT Network in Wales through sharing and experiencing ways of managing meetings, group discussions and events.

One of the aims of the TT Movement is to encourage individual and local responsibility.  In relation to meetings and group events there is a need for awareness of democratic, creative ways of exploring issues.  Also, there is a need for people to feel more confident to initiate and try different methods.

The Movement is growing and attracting people with energy, enthusiasm and a sense of urgency.  Alongside this there is a need to look after the energy and dynamics of the core groups; to ensure that discussions are effective and that tensions can be accepted and worked with. Trainer: Iona Sawtell; Cost £5

Please book at transitiondyfi@yahoo.co.uk / 01970 832818

Transition Bro Ddyfi presents a talk by:

Green Cuba specialist Roberto Perez on his UK tour

13th September 2008 7.30pm

at Ysgol Bro Ddyfi,

Machynlleth

Venue will be signposted from the Dragon Petrol Station near the Clock tower.

Donations will be collected on the door to cover costs.

Climate change and peak oil are on many people's minds today. The big question is how do we make the transition to a low energy society, and what would such a society be like? The way Cuba adapted to the Special Period when oil was in short supply is a model that many people are trying to learn and take inspiration from.

Roberto PerezRoberto Perez is a Cuban permaculturist and environmental educator who will be on tour in the UK in September. Roberto worked to develop urban food growing in the Special Period to increase Cuba's food security, using permaculture techniques which seek sustainable solutions by following nature's patterns.

Cuba's experience is explained in the award-winning documentary film, The Power of Community, in which Roberto features, and now he will be visiting groups and food growing projects across the country, many of which are organising events for local people to hear him talk about the transition in Cuba.

Transition Speed Networking Event This Friday 28th March 2007
Machynlleth Bowling Club
Behind Co-op
7.30pm
Entrance free / donations

Come and meet other people from the area who are interested in sustainability and the transition to a future beyond fossil fuels.

  • Want to tell people about a project or idea?
  • Want to find out what other people and groups are up to in the area?
  • Want to meet other people who are interested in the same issues or areas as you?
  • Even if you just want some people to help you put up a shed or build a raised bed.
What could you do if you had other people to do it with you????

A great opportunity for everyone to get even more involved with the transition process. The evening will be very informal, we are hoping that there will be food available and we will have access to the bowling club bar.
Apart from the speed networking we will be making a map of the Dyfi Valley Transition Network showing the different projects, businesses and organisations in the area working towards sustainability, and the connections between them.

There will be the opportunity for groups of people to emerge who feel, after the networking sessions, that they have a common purpose. These groups may want to record their goal, who is taking part in that group, what will be their first step and a date for the completion of the goal. Goals could be big or small, pre-existing or newly emergent. This record can then be built on over time and will help us tell the story of our collective journey.

There will also be a suggestions board for things that we might do to raise awareness of peak oil and climate change in the area. The suggestions could include ideas, offers, contacts, feedback or whatever else we collectively come up with.

Finally we will have an exhibition of the "Machynlleth 2025 - visions of the future" that were created at Seedy Sunday and invite you all to bring more contributions. Sitting down and taking time to imagine how a positive transitioned future might be can be a powerful step towards making it happen.

ALSO:

Don't forget Ember are having a release party in Machynlleth on Saturday, and will be accompanied by the latest addition to the Ember family – accordionist Jamie Smith (who you may have heard fronting the fabulous South Wales-based band Mabon).  There will be other singer/songwiters on the night, as well as Goulashed (Machynlleth’s own gypsy band!), wine upon entry and some of the best world dance music from our local DJ.

Hope to see you there!   J Rebecca and Emily
